Arthritis might not always be preventable, if it happens to be in your genetics. There are ways that you can prevent arthritis from coming on full force or happening at all by taking care of your body’s needs. Those means are diet and exercise.

The Type of Diet You Need

When you eat properly, your body will be in better shape to help fight off harmful substances or conditions. There are several foods that you should avoid in order to increase your chances of preventing arthritis. Some of those types of foods include:

  • Fried foods
  • Prepared frozen meals
  • Sugars such as baked good, sodas, processed foods, and candies
  • Dairy products
  • Lots of salt or salty foods
  • Foods that contain corn oil

You can replace a lot of these types of foods with fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables can give you vitamins, protein, and many other substances that are good for you. You can also replace soda with water to help prevent arthritis. Also, the use of tobacco or excessive amounts of alcohol can increase your chance of getting arthritis. It is best to try to stop using tobacco or drinking large amounts of alcohol to reduce your risks of health issues.

Exercises You Can Do

Exercise is another great way to prevent arthritis. You don’t have to work out excessively in order to prevent it. You can just spend a few extra minutes a day or plan a schedule throughout the week of when you will work out. Some workouts that you can do can include:

  • Low-impact workouts
  • Swimming
  • Biking
  • Pilates
  • Elliptical use
  • Yoga or simple stretching

If you try to work out too often or lift weights that are too heavy, you are not going to prevent arthritis. You should limit yourself to twenty minutes for three days a week, or thirty minutes for five days a week. This will depend on the amount of time you are used to working out.

You will need to consider reducing the other types of activity you do throughout the week. Excessively walking, playing sports, running, working out, and other activities can put more stress on your joints and can cause arthritis to flare up. Also, when you walk it is important to keep proper posture at all times and to not sit for long periods of times.
